5 Tips for Creating Effective Direct Mail Pieces

If you’re a business owner, getting the word out about your company can feel like a challenge. Between social media marketing and traditional advertising, there are so many options to make your business known to potential customers. While marketing digitally is effective, it’s important to still remember the more traditional methods, such as direct mail. Direct mail is one way to advertise your business and gain a more extensive clientele. Not sure how to go about it? Here are five tips for creating effective direct mail pieces that will bring your company business.

1. Use the Right Materials

When getting started with direct mail marketing, the first thing you’ll want to consider is the materials you use. This may not sound important, but the size and type of paper you use will influence your audience. Plus, it’s a great way to solidify your message. For example, if your company caters to a higher-end clientele, heavy cardstock or an embossed envelope will give a more luxurious appeal. If your current direct mail message is short and sweet, try a postcard for a fun way to get it out.

2. Avoid the Gimmicks

It can be tempting to use common gimmicks in an attempt to grab the attention of your audience, but most people can see right through them. Be wary of printing gimmicks like hard-to-read fonts, too many exclamation marks, and all caps.

Also, beware of messaging gimmicks, like styling your mail to look like something else entirely, such as a free prize or a check. Be honest with your customers about what you’re offering, and they’ll learn to trust your brand.

3. Focus on Your Brand

Speaking of brands, direct mail is a great way to solidify your brand to your customers. When creating direct mail, make sure that your brand is the primary focus. You should use the same color schemes, fonts, and general appearance in every piece you send. The more recognizable your brand, the more likely people will be to trust your company and turn to it when they need your product or services.

4. Know Your Audience

Whatever type of business you have, you should know who your target audience is. Who is most likely to use your service or product? Once you know the demographics of your potential customers, you can design direct mail pieces that will appeal to them.

5. Include a Call-to-Action

The main reason for direct mail is to attract more customers and keep current customers returning to your business. Each piece you send out should encourage your audience to do that through a call to action. Encouraging your customers to do something with the actual piece of mail will keep it from ending up in the junk mail pile. Consider discounts, prize drawings, or coupon codes for online shopping.
